Back to basics questionable.... - |

I purchased a Back to basics grain mill for the purpose of long term grid down situation or a social collapse to be more direct. I've heard many concerns about the overall durability and longevity of this Back to Basics Grain Mill which is of concern to me as someone who wants to ENSURE the ongoing use of my grain mill to produce food when there is none found on store shelves. To ensure I always have one, I purchased the infamous COUNTRY LIVING GRAIN MILL with all the accesories and additional grinding plates etc etc. Far more money, but FAR BETTER results plain and simple.

Great Deal, Quality Product - |

I purchased a back to basics grain mill. It's built of VERY durable and very attractive stainless steel. It's top quailty. The replacement parts are inexpensive, but I have not had to replace anything. As to the quality of the flour it produces using wheat .... if you run the wheat through once on a coarse grind, then run it a second time on the finest setting, (which is quite simple--the second go is much easier), I find the flour to be slightly coarser than regular whole wheat flour you might buy at a store, but it still makes an EXCELLENT dough, even when using 100% whole wheat. This is a PERFECT grain mill for home prepardeness and for milling small amounts of grain on a regular basis. If you are looking for super fine flour, then perhaps you should pay more for a highly sophisticated mill (stone is best).

Purchased this and tried it out milling durham grain, took 1/2 hour of cranking
to get 1 cup of flour. After 5 minutes had to put my fingers on the grain and give it a downward pressure to get it to work at all. Will try to get a refund.

Perfect accesory to emergency food storage. - |

I have an electric grain mill that I use most of the time at home. I got this grain mill for emergency storage, but I have used it a lot more then I ever thought I would. It is a great size to store, and it is easy to use. I have used a few different hand grain mills and this one makes the best flour for me. It also adjusts to make larger pieces so we use it to make cracked wheat for breakfast all the time. I have had it for a long time, I think 15 or so years, and it still works as well as the day we got it. It is a lot of work, but all hand grain mills are. It does not grind as fine as the flour you buy in the store but I am very pleased with the results.

Problems with mill - |

My mill broke after grinding wheat whith it twice and herbs with it once. My husband is a fairly handy man and was able to fix it, but I have concerns for anyone expecting it to work long term without a handy husband. I have a friend who has been using hers for years without any trouble. I think the recent high demand for this grain mill has caused some less than spectacular manufacturing in an effort to produce them faster.
