Q: 1. why is the charcoal filter needed?
2. where are these filters available and what is the cost?
3. I think there were some comments of this coffee maker leaking water on the countertop; has this been a problem ?

A: The charcoal filter is not required for the coffee maker to function properly, it is simply included to improve the taste of your coffee because it filters the water used to brew the coffee. You can obtain replacement filters directly from KitchenAid by calling 800-541-6390. I have not heard of this coffee maker having any issues with leaking but since warranty issues are handled directly through KitchenAid it might be best to ask them directly by calling the number above. They should be able to tell you if they have had a high percentage of warranty claims on this model of coffee maker.

So I hightly DO NOT recommend this coffee maker. First off I wanted a 14 cup but had to settle for a 12-cup. Well this coffee maker does say it brews 12 but when you fill it to the line and hit brew... it Miraculously pulls extra water from the air somewhere and coffee brew spills out of the pot and all over my counters. It has done this 4 to 5 times now. so I have to brew a 10 cup and it won't happen. Either it makes extra steam or something, but this is totally unacceptable. Also the flavour is never consistent and have not been able to get the perfect cup of coffee as of yet. I love my coffee and this product..... gets a HUGE FAIL from me. I'm returning it today!

Has great design ideas, but product is unreliable -
The removable and washable water bin is a super idea. The glass pot actually pours coffee without dripping and spilling like every other pot I've had before. 5 stars for those two features. However, the operating instructions are quirky and completely counter-intuitive. Sometimes you can hit the "brew" button once to make it start, sometimes two presses are required. The brew light blinks all night if you use auto-set, which looks like an error and is annoying. To use the clean cycle, you are instructed to press "Mode" 5 times, then hit Brew button. Sometimes that does not make it go through the clean cycle and instead all you do is "brew" vinegar solution and waste time and money. It may work the next time you try it, after using another dose of vinegar solution and spending more time fussing with it. Occasionally and without any apparent reason, only a half portion of water will be dispensed into the brewing process, making the machine sputter and spit while it keeps trying to suck up the rest of the water, and wasting coffee and time because you have to wash everything and grind more coffee and start over. So far when that happens, starting over will turn out successfully. Once so far, the button plug on the water dispenser got stuck in the open position, which of course produced a leaking mess. The various button-pushing requirements are so counter-intuitive and inconsistent that guests cannot help themselves or help me in the kitchen. The plastic water bin developed a pressure crack at the "handle" location after only a few very careful and gentle uses. I do not trust this machine and I don't run it unless I can stand there watching it. I'm disappointed.
