      • Could this slicer be used to cut cabbage for Sauerkraut ?
      • Yes, this slicer/shredder would work well for slicing or shredding smaller batches of cabbage for Sauerkraut. For larger batches you might consider a free standing food processor as it would be more time efficient.
      • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
    • From at 11/18/12 6:06 AM
      • Is the Kitchenaid slicer attachment compatible with meat? Like to slice a turkey ham or something that size or is it too small? Thanks
      • The Kitchenaid RVSA Slicer Shredder attachment can process the following, per the owner's manual.
"No. 1 Fine Shredder — Finely
        shreds hard and crisp vegetables,
such as carrots, beets, turnips, potatoes,
        celery, nuts, firm cold cheese,
        coconut and dry bread.
        No. 2 Coarse Shredder —
        Coarsely shreds carrots, celery,
        onions, fruits, nuts or chocolate.
Potatoes can be shredded for shoestrings
        or hash browns.
No. 3 Thick Slicer — Gives a thick
slice for firm foods. Perfect for vegetables
that are to be steamed, fried,
        scalloped or creamed.
No. 4 Thin Slicer — Thinly slices
vegetables for cole slaw, potato chips,
        sauerkraut, bread and butter pickles,
        sliced cucumbers, radishes, celery
        and nuts."

I do not see meat in there anywhere. I believe it is due to the size of the attachment feeder, as well as texture. If you tried to slice a processed ham, for instance, this Kitchenaid slicer attachment would probably do it, but not well, simply due to size. If you tried to slice steak, due to texture, I'd imagine you'd have a mess on your hands. We have a large selection of meat slicers available, if you want to view them. Save your money for something a good food processor Review by

    Rating

I am a beginner cook and am not ready to spend big bucks on expensive equipment (well, I did get a KitchenAid Proline 7qt mixer) and my hope was that this shredder/grater would do a decent job so that I wouldn't have to purchase an expensive food processor. As it turned out, money would have been better spent on (saved for) a good food processor.
The size is good, versatility is good but the problem I have with this attachment is that it leaves quite a bit of food in the chute. There is a significant enough gap between the two pushers and the blades. When the pushers are completely inserted, they are not close enough to the blades. Thus, they leave whatever it is you try to grate between the pushers and the blade. Too bad. The size is right, the versatility is good but the technical design leaves this product in the underperformer category. I should have saved the money, added some, and spent it on a decent food processor. Oh well, I'm still learning that persuing something cheap often times ends up in dissatisfaction. The slicer/ shredder works well and fast, it is a bit tricky to get it attach to the mixer power port, but after one gets used to it it becomes easy. It is best to clean the cones right after use to avoid food getting stuck in the cutting edges of the cone. (Posted on 1/29/16)

We use these quite often. Great for slicing and shredding Zucchini for breads or drying. Sheds frozen cheese. I have read some have trouble with them rusting. I wash mine in the dishwasher let them air dry then spray them with any can spray oil I have on hand. I then wrap each one separate in a clean cotton cloth square and stack together. I have used them for over 2 years and there has never been a speck of rust on any of them. (Posted on 1/25/16)

    Loved it! Review by

Love it! Works great on firm vegetables! Makes quick work of potatoes and sweet potatoes! Haven't tried to shred cheese yet but I believe as long as the cheese is hard cold and firm it will do fine. I read reviews of how this product only produces mush and I suspect that is only with softer fruits (wouldn't be good for tomatoes) and cheeses at room temp that you would have problems trying to shred even by hand. This is a gem and a must have! It was the first attachment I purchased to maximize my kitchenaid mixer's usefulness and I have no regrets! (Posted on 12/30/15)

My grandmother had a hand crank shredder slicer that worked a lot like this one. I bet she wished she would have had one of these instead. Makes easy work of these jobs. I would say it's a good product overall. (Posted on 12/11/15)

I have no doubt this product will live up to Kitchen Aid's reputation. It is a gift for my d-i-l, but I may have to get one too. I had such a pleasant experience with everything Kitchens, I have no doubt that I will be a returning customer. (Posted on 2/11/13)

Would not grate the cabbage Review by

I was making coleslaw for a dinner and decided to use my slicer/grater attachment. It made a mess of my cabbage. This was my first time using it and maybe my last. Instead, I used my small kitchen aid chopper- which works like a charm everytime. Will probably return the rotor slicer/grater. (Posted on 4/1/12)

Hard to put on and off, I'm not happy with the slicer that is suppose to slice thick. There isn't much difference between it and thin slice. (Posted on 11/2/11)

I had to make a huge amount of coleslaw for a cookout and used the Kitchenaid shredder for about 40 heads of cabbage without having any problems. It is not particularly easy to put on and take off, so I don't use it for quick jobs, but it certainly works well when you have a big job to do. (Posted on 5/13/11)

Had to be replaced after first use. Shaft torn up. Second one hard to install. Can not install or remove shaft only when installed on the mixer!!! It takes both hands pulling really hard to remove Kitchenaid Slicer/Shredder from the stand mixer. Wife doesn't use any more. (Posted on 5/10/11)

I have this item and absolutely love it. Makes my scalloped potatoes so easy to make. However, after several years of use the plastic has split and now I need to buy a new one. Need to improve the plastic where the pressure made it split. (Posted on 6/20/10)
