Rustic Thanksgiving Table Setting
Written October 7, 2016 by Rebecca Christus, Buyer
The weather is turning cooler here in Springfield Missouri and here at Everything Kitchens we are looking forward to the coming holiday season. I especially am looking forward to hosting my first family Thanksgiving in our new home. Thanksgiving when I was younger always meant a fun day on my grandpa's farm in Blackwater Missouri; playing with our cousins from Kansas City, looking for the newest batch of barn kittens outside, and of course feasting on the traditional turkey and pumpkin pie (however the ham was always the favorite meat for us). This table setting for me is a fond reminder of that time at the farmhouse. Especially with the loss of my grandfather a few weeks ago this rustic Thanksgiving table setting is one that I will cherish always.
I love my table and hate to hide it under a tablecloth during the holidays. However adding a table runner can lend a nice backdrop to your holiday table and help protect your table from scratches and scuffs. Adding a this table runner was an easy way to make even a modern table design, like mine, tie into this rustic table setting. The runner we used here is an elegant loose weave linen runner from Now Designs. The nice things about a more neutral table runners like this one is that it is not holiday specific and can be used all year round for any special occasion.
Pumpkins, Pumpkins. Pumpkins!
Our rustic table features many gorgeous ceramic pumpkin serving dishes from MudPie and Staub. The 14" Pumpkin embossed serving platter from Mud Pie as well as an adorable matching dip bowl that is great for pre-feast snacking too. The fun white washed burlap texture of both of these Mud Pie items that takes me back to the farm and particularly I remember the sweet, earthy smell of the hay barn and the old burlap oat bags all of us kids would go play in during the hours leading up to the Thanksgiving meal. These MudPie serving pieces are subtle enough in there design and milk white color that they can easily match with your current dinnerware. These Mud Pie pieces also pair wonderfully with Staub's famous 3.5Qt Pumpkin French Oven and smaller pumpkin cocottes. The smaller Staub Pumpkin Coccottes come in both a 16 & 24 oz size and are available in both a burnt orange and creamy white colors. These pumpkin cocottes are ideal for individual servings of soup or a warm individual serving of apple crisp. The cocotte's lid will help to insure that it stays good and warm. On thing that I love about all of these pumpkin pieces is that they can be utilized for any fall gathering be it Halloween,Thanksgiving, or and harvest celebration.
Deciding on the pieces in the place setting is always the biggest thing for me and probably the hardest thing. What I finally settles on and am so happy I did was a Oregano Green Dinner Plate from Signature Housewares and a beautiful scroll pattern, terracotta colored square dinner plate from Home Essentials. Pairing a round and square plate can sometimes be a little tricky but the scalloped edges of the square salad plate actually gives the plate a more rounded appearance. The patterns on these plates, while different, have similar shapes allowing them to work well together without being too matchie, matchie which works well for the rustic pieced together look we are going for. The addition of dark rattan charger allows the earthy colors of the plates to really pop and the turkey embroidered napkin laid over the plates finishes things off and really makes it "Thanksgiving". We used copper colored flatware set from Knork, the style of this flatware is considered very modern however the copper color and elegant curve of the handles plays nicely with the scalloped edges of the salad plate making it right at home in this more rustic traditional tabletop . A copper Old Dutch Hammered Moscow Mule Mug and wine glass finishes off our place setting. The finishing touch thought that really makes this setting Thanksgiving ready are the turkey embroidered cloth napkins.
Probably the two pieces that make me think most of my Grandfather's farmhouse are the MudPie 2 Tier Pedestal and the MudPie Square Bowl Pedestal. The light wood paired with the enameled white I can't help but think of the pristine white counter tops and white cabinet knobs of the small farmhouse kitchen. It was always clean, warm and cozy; truly everyone's favorite room to be in, which sometimes possed a problem as it was also the smallest room in the home. If you were lucky enough to get into the room or by some grace got a chair at the kitchen table you stayed there in that coveted position listening to the adults telling stories and jokes and munching on all the pre-thanksgiving meal snacks. Perhaps I was just an odd child but I would rather be there listening, learning, and laughing then almost anywhere else on that farm.
In closing I hope you have enjoyed our Rustic Thanksgiving Tabletop. I know I will enjoy hosting my Thanksgiving with this wonderful tabletop setting.
